Observation: School of >200 adult surf smelt appeared to be 'testing' the substrate for spawning. Individuals would briefly brush against the substrate (coarse sand) and rejoin the school. No spawning was observed. Fish were observed in ~1m of water during a 2.5m tide (2.5m above chart datum).
