Common murre sightings; a concern for the predatory and scavenger bird numbers
Observation: After a series of large of storms that moved through the area, many flocks of common murres have been observed in the open freshwater's of Lake Iliamna. They seem unable to survive in the fresh water. Many dead and weak common murres have been seen littering the lake shores. Eagles, magpies, and camp robbers have been seen eating the carcasses of these dead seabirds. We do not see the eagles, magpies and camp robbers any more now. They could possibly be cruising the shores looking for more carcasses but the eagles that we see here are what we call "residents" they seem to rarely leave the area.
